8.26.15 - Day SEVEN

Happy Wednesday, all!  And yet we have quite the beautiful day amongst us again!  Why couldn't it have been this way this summer?  Grrrr.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
You may remember students taking an end of the year assessment in Benchmark over all concepts learned throughout the year last year.  To start this year, students must take a PRE-assessment to see what skills they have retained from previous years and where I need to begin on instruction with them.  It helps me to know where their mastery of concepts begins and ends.  Because of the Boy Scouts meeting on Monday, Mrs. Schleg's class lost class time so they did not get to the Loser question portion of class like my class which goes with the "First 30 Days of Routines and Rituals Lessons from Benchmark Literacy, focusing on appropriate questioning and responses with partners and groups.  Thus, after the pre-assessment, they were able to participate in this activity.  5T worked on something to do with goal setting that will be on display tomorrow night at Open House...
...SPEAKING OF...YOU ARE COMING TO OPEN HOUSE, AREN'T YOU?!?  It's 6:30-8 TOMORROW EVENING.  Please meet us teachers and Mrs. Zettel in the cafeteria by 6:30PM for a quick meeting before heading upstairs to our classrooms.  (Your students may or may not have prepared a little something for you that will be on display).  Parents of 5T students, IF you have a tablet that downloads apps, would you mind bringing it with you and downloading the app, "Aurasma" beforehand, please??  If you do not have a tablet or one that will not sync with compatible apps, then need not worry, you can borrow mine!  It's just a little something :)
We also worked on some WRITING/ GRAMMAR.  We learned in our narrative pre-assessment that inserting dialogue is an area of growth for many students so this was a concept in which we had a quick 10 minute lesson and students worked on writing sentences correctly using this feature.

HOMEWORK: READING LOG- 30 MINUTES (minimum)

MATH:
LEARNING TARGET: 1) I CAN read and write whole numbers through billions in words, standard form, and expanded form.
First, we checked our Simple Solutions due today and then reviewed our Workbook pages due today
MATH #1 worked on the lesson of expanded form that Math #2 had time to complete on Monday. They learned how to stretch out and recognize the value of each place-value digit.
HOMEWORK: Workbook page 2; Simple Solutions pages 7 & 8 due Friday

Math #2:
LEARNING TARGET: 2) I CAN read and write decimals with values greater than one in words and standard form.
Worked on the concept of DECIMALS.  Last year in 4th grade, they took decimals out to the hundredths place.  This year, we will be working out to the thousandths place.  We discussed how decimals are the only time that you are allowed to use the word "and" in a number or else the number being read is wrong and people often mistakenly add it when conversing with others.  We also discussed the many places that decimals can be found, specifically with money and how we can always go back to money to help us with equating the value of decimals; i.e., it takes ten tenths to equal 1 whole so a tenth is like a dime, it takes 100 hundredths to equal 1 whole so a hundredth is like a penny, and 1 whole is like 1 whole dollar since each of these comprise monetary amounts to get to them.  Next, it was time to study a thousandth which is the next place-value step beyond a hundredth. This a bit more difficult for students to master because there is no monetary value to equate it to, so we just made one up: we called it: a JIMMY!  It takes one thousand JIMMIES to equal 1 whole dollar and to get from each place-value to the next, you must multiply by ten.  The students practiced going forward and backwards with this and then writing decimals in standard, word, and fraction form as well as equivalent forms.
HOMEWORK: Workbook pages 3 and 4; Simple Solutions pages 7 & 8 due Friday
This was their entrance slip (quiz)

SCIENCE:
Students got to do AWESOME Science experiments to see if gym shoes made them jump higher or not.  They hypothesized that they did to which they concluded that they were indeed correct!
HOMEWORK: none

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Students reviewed homework and started discussing the land bridge, Beringia, that connected Asia to North America in the Ice Age
HOMEWORK: read Chapter 1 (pages 47-51) and study for quiz Friday

RELIGION

SOCIAL STUDIES:
HOMEWORK: Complete colorings of drawings and definitions of landforms
Misc:
HOMEWORK: Complete Flashbacks from Monday and Tuesday (shown below).  You may be wondering, what are flashbacks?  Flashbacks are our Morning Work.  They are a means of continuous review for our students.  Each morning, they are presented with 9 questions (sometimes less) from the content areas of Language Arts (sometimes with Religion), Math, and Science/ Social Studies.  This is so they are constantly reviewing previously learned content so it is not forgotten and stays at the forefront of their minds.  This is a BIG year in terms of testing and we want to ensure that knowledge is locked in deep and not just for Terra Nova testing, but for middle school and beyond! Flashbacks help to ensure that students are constantly utilizing concepts of the past and applying them here in the present and beyond.  They typically do not become homework, but our 5th graders have been quite the chatty Kathies the past two days so now they will be completing what they did not finish at home.  This also gives them the opportunity to research any content they may have forgotten (ahem Religion...)

LEXI is our Blogger this week, but her Mom is GETTING MARRIED!  YAAAAAY!  Thus, today is her only day of blogging and someone else will be stepping in her spot for the rest of the week.  Click HERE for her post from today.

Guess what?  Mrs. Ruley (7R) had her baby!  It was a girl that they named Rosie!  Isn't that wonderful?!?  Extra special congratulations to Mrs. Ruley, our 7th & 8th grades Language Arts teacher!

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Mrs. Thomas

8.24.15 - Day FIVE

Hello all!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!  It was beautiful, wasn't it?!?  It was nice seeing many of you out supporting our Monarchs who crushed the Saint Bernard Wildcats yesterday!!! Whew, and HOW ABOUT THAT END OF THE HALF CATCH FROM OUR VERY OWN ADAM BOONE?!!!!!?  WOWZA!!!!!  I have still such goosebumps!  It was THE PLAY of the day!  So proud of our dude and ALL of our little football stars! I got so excited hearing each of their names announced over the loudspeaker for making plays...Jaxon...Aaron...Jack...and on and on!  I'm just so proud!!!  Go boys, GO!

(I SO wish I had pics of the game...and SO wish I had a video and/ or pic of Booney's catch- it was seriously legendary, folks.  And his celebration?  Precious.  Just...precious. Thus, we will have to settle for a reenactment which is just as priceless!)

And then our cheerleaders were outstanding performing at halftime.  They learned their routine on FRIDAY and still managed to pull it off into something outstanding.  SO proud of those girls too! Boy, it was HOT!

LANGUAGE ARTS:
LEARNING TARGET: I CAN clearly explain the purpose of a reader's workshop. 2) I CAN develop and demonstrate rules for what reader's workshop looks and sounds like. 3) I CAN explore acceptable responses and questions when sharing with a partner and whole group.
We discussed the purpose of Reader's Workshop today and why it is necessary and moreover, why we have it.  We clarified that it is to build a community of readers and therefore a community of learners and to create an atmosphere that is conducive to being our best reading selves.  We also brainstormed rules to implement so that this may be carried out through Reader's Workshop.   Students brainstormed their own rules and then we also made a chart.  I must say, their rules were far better than mine!  Finally, we discussed acceptable responses and questions whens haring with a partner and whole group.  Students brainstormed questions that would entice conversation between partners and amongst a group and my goodness, they did wonderful!  Again, their questions were far better than my teacher text's example!  My homeroom had enough time to work with a partner over their Loser questions that I had posted on the blog over the summer.  They discussed possible answers and then began creating questions over the next 50 pages.

8.21.15 - Day FOUR

Woooo Hooooooo, it's Friday!  These babies officially have their first week of 5th grade under their belts!  Hard to believe that the first of 36 weeks is D-O-N-E!
LANGUAGE ARTS:
We began getting ready for whole-group instruction.  I encouraged smooth transitions when coming and going to whole-group instruction by teaching my signal which is a chime on my timer.  We also made notes about Where, When, and How of the whole-group instruction takes place and how to sit during.

We then discussed the habits of good listeners and how to develop good listening habits.  I gave an example of this by asking students to tell me about their favorite books.  The first person I called on, I fidgeted with pens and was in and out of my desk, doodled, talked to others, made no eye contact with the speaker, etc.  I then asked the students to note what they observed about my listening and they pinpointed all of these negative traits.  I asked them if I appeared to be a good listener to which they all collectively shouted, "No!"  Then, I asked another student.  To this student, I was attentive, I asked questions about the book, I had my body turned towards him/ her, I made eye contact, I was easy to talk to, etc. and the students noted the difference on a t-chart. It was an obvious difference and the two students I talked with discussed how they felt about my attentiveness and the second student obviously felt much better. We discussed how this is relevant in whole-group instruction AND in small groups as well.  It is important to make our listeners feel as if they are heard and as if what they are saying is important.

WRITING: Students created a NARRATIVE piece from the viewpoint of the survivor from the survival activity of yesterday.  They were encouraged to include the dialogue in which we've been working upon and the emotional components and description we've been discussing as well.

MATH
We went over our Simple Solutions due today and learned about organizing our math notebooks. Liam even helped demonstrate Line Plots on the SMARTBoard for us...that Liam, he's so resourceful!
