10.10.14 - Day THIRTY-NINE: Walk a Monarch Mile in our Shoes

Good day, everyone!  Today is the day- the day we've been waiting for... the day of the first annual Monarch Mile!!!  SMA raised an awe-inspiring $22,000+!!!  Between the DJ, walking, dancing, laughing, and just being together as a class, grade, and school, WE HAD AN ABSOLUTE BLAST!!!  Thank you so much to all of our parents, volunteers, PTO, and others who made this event possible- we are so excited for it in years to come!  Enjoy some pics from our morning...

Tonight is Homecoming and the Fall Festival (rain or shine), so please make plans to attend :)  I will be there and may have a special guest (or two) in tow

Our MORNING:
Prior to our walk, we spent our morning together and did NOT switch classes.  It was heaven.  Don't get me wrong, I am beyond in love with and wholeheartedly ADORE all of my precious and sweet 5th grade babies, but it was nice having just my homeroom kiddos for a bit.  We had some fun with our morning work- I talked with them about stereotypes (what they are and what they mean) and then we made fun of ourselves as a society for our clichés, and the stereotypes of fall.  I showed them a few memes like this...

...and then they wrote their own short stories, comics, or commentaries about the stereotypes of fall.  It was just a fun little creative writing activity where we were able to strap on our humorous hats and make some fun about pumpkin everything and the extreme commercialization of fall and Christmas.  They seriously did a great job!  Check out a few favorites:

Class Meeting:
Then, we had a class meeting and addressed some points like the excessive talking, whispering about someone in front that person, always building each other up (instead of bringing others down), etc.  It wasn't that these issues are going on (well, except for the talking), but it was just some things for building and continually working on demonstrating good character in all situations.  On that note, our "Praise in his Name..." wall is filling UP with some wonderful praises for other friends.  I just love how we are quick to celebrate the good things others are doing for peers.  Quite simply, I just love US! 

After the Monarch Mile:
After the Monarch Mile, the kiddos were quite wound up, so we put on a movie (Monster's Inc.- one of my faves!) and let them get collected and simmer down.  We headed to lunch and then recess.

PM Activities:
We got on with our regular schedule- except, instead of math, we had reading where students finished up their MLK Jr. timelines and Jackie Robinson summaries.

HOMEWORK NOTE: In RELIGION, Students have a few things to get done over the weekend: Bring in ONE empty soda can and complete study guide for test NEXT Wednesday (10/15).

Every morning I wake up to a alarm clock. This morning I was not in the mood to wake up.

6:29...BOOOOOOO!  After getting up, I immediately get dressed in my SMA attire...

My dad always makes me breakfast while I am still sleeping.  This morning, it was cinnamon toast.  Yes, PLAIN cinnamon toast- yummy!  This is my typical morning go-to breakfast :)

After breakfast, I get the stink off my breath by brushing my teeth before heading out the door

I get and prepare my backpack for the school day before loading up in the car

Every Friday morning I get ride in the car with my mom because she gets to go into work a little late.

You can never start a school day without putting your backpack away in your locker.

After the Monarch Mile, we watched Monster's Inc. to settle down

I ate lunch at 11:35.  Today was LUNCH BUNCH in the classroom where we continued watching Monster's Inc.!  Surprise, surprise, it was my usual lunch of noodles!  I also had 3 Oreos and water 

After lunch, I practiced my dance routine with my fellow cheerleaders for tonight and played with friends outside, wearing my super soft and fuzzy gloves:

When we came in from Recess, I had to get my books that I gathered this morning and head over to Mrs. Kalmey for Science and Social Studies time.  We worked on finishing our sentences and pictures and had a pop quiz over the Makah.  

After over 45 minutes there, I came back to the classroom for Reading with Mrs. Thomas where I worked on my summary for the Jackie Robinson timeline and my timeline of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. article

School is OVER for this week!  I am off to enjoy my weekend! Tonight, I perform with my cheerleading squad at Homecoming!

10.9.14 - Day THIRTY-EIGHT: the day of the bugs

Happy Thursday, all!  I hope today has been wonderful for you!  Students from Mrs. Schleg's class were phenomenal in their parts of the Liturgy today!  Emma H. and Luke C. (and Baylee from our class) were servers; Alyssa read (and was AWESOME, by the way!); Sophia led prayer (beautifully!); and Abby P., Hailey, Janie, Alexis, Connor, Savannah, Lucas, and Matthew were gift bearers.  Way to go guys, we are proud of you always and you represented the 5th grade well!

Also, today is BUG PROJECT DAY!!!  I am so proud of all of the amazing work that was sent in!  You guys found some CRAZY bugs and these projects are fantastic!  Excellent work!

MASS:

LANGUAGE ARTS BLOCK:
1) I can identify the sequence of events in the pictures and dates on a timeline. 2) I can identify and use the signal language for sequencing.
Students got in Literature Circles and did their last roles for these books.  All are assigned to complete their books by next Thursday, but do not have to do a role because there are many more pages to read than usual.  Students will begin their projects upon their books next week and these will be due by November 6th.  A Wrinkle in Time people were assigned their projects today- these are due by Oct. 30th (because they already finished their books).  If your student comes home with his/ her project sheet, please note which project he/ she selected and begin the design/ construction process as these are a huge grade.  I have given (or will be giving) each group a large set of review questions about their book- the group can work on these together or independently and at their convenience as they are a study tool for the final test for comprehension over that chapter book.  The final test for comprehension over the chapter book can be taken any time the student wishes prior to the due date of their project as this is a large component of their overall project grade as well.  Does this make sense?  Hopefully it does, but you know where to reach me if it does not :)
Also, if your student does not come home with the project sheet today, do NOT worry, this just means they are finishing their chapter book before next Thursday as they are not in the Wrinkle in Time group.
HOMEWORK: complete reading of chapter book before next Thursday (10/16); Reading Logs (with exceptional, clear and concise summaries) are due tomorrow for this week

We completed our estimating Shopping List activity from yesterday (most of us, actually) and then in Math 2, we moved on to begin learning how to multiply a 3-digit number by a 3-digit number.

REMINDERS:

**TOMORROW is the Monarch Mile beginning at 10 A.M.!  Yes, you may attend and walk with your student.  If it is raining, we will still have the walk, but in the gym.  Students who got a t-shirt may wear them tomorrow with jeans or other acceptable bottoms of their choosing (except for yoga pants)

10.8.14 - Day THIRTY-SEVEN

Hump Day, friends, and what a beautiful one it is!  I mean...WOWZA!!!  We enjoyed some extra minutes outside today due to our many compliments from Resource Day yesterday (did I not mention that yesterday?!?  I had THREE different teachers make it a point to go out of their way and stop by and see me to tell me how absolutely wonderful these babies were in their resource classes!!!  What MUSIC to this gal's ears!) and what a terrific day it was for that!  Thank you, babies, for being so awesome yesterday so that we may enjoy this fabulousness today!  Now, whaddya say we whip this behavior up everyday?!?

LANGUAGE ARTS BLOCK:
Learning Target: 1) I can identify the sequence of events in the pictures and dates on a timeline.  2) I can identify and use the signal language for sequencing.
We are continuing our study of using sequencing to summarize events of a text.  We practiced with reading a Scientific process for measuring weights of stuffed animals, and then read about the Titanic where students then had to find the most important events and put them in order on an organizer.

READING GROUPS: Students continued reading article about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. where they are created a life-size timeline about the events of his life (they have to determine these from their reading of the text) using index cards <--this is such an advanced concept and they are doing GREAT!
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Students also continued studying a timeline of the lives of Jackie and Rachel Robinson to write a summary based off of the events.
HOMEWORK: Literature Circle Roles DUE TOMORROW (Thursday, Oct. 9th); Reading Logs due Friday (with awesome, clear and concise summaries!)

SCIENCE:
Students reviewed vocabulary that was due today and discussed the Water Cycle in their textbooks.
HOMEWORK: Bug projects due tomorrow (10/9)

SOCIAL STUDIES:
The students learned about the Makah Indians, reading pages 74-75 with Mrs. Kalmey.
HOMEWORK: none

MATH:
Learning Target: I can estimate products of whole numbers and money amounts.
We reviewed our workbook page from homework (page 18), looking at the estimated amounts, and used the method of making the numbers as easy as possible to multiply (rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds) and then using our patterns of multiplication (with zeros) trick to get our final multiplied estimate.  Then, we practiced with the concept of using estimation to determine prices by using THIS school store supply list and answering some questions found within.  Once students completed these, we stepped up our practice and made it more rigorous and challenging by answering some more difficult questions about the shopping list:

HOMEWORK: none (use your time to do some awesome final touches on those Bug Projects!)

Also, special request... we have been using our expensive graphing calculators in math and have come across an issue: most to all batteries are DEAD...ahhhh!  We are in desperate need of about 100 AAA batteries (yes, THAT many- each calculator takes 4, so that's how many are dead!) to get all of these calculators up and running for our use in mathematics instruction and practice.  Might you be able/ willing to send in a pack to donate to our cause, please?!?  I figure if everyone is willing to send in a pack, we should be up to full working capacity in the calculator arena in no time.  Thank you so, so much in advance :)

RELIGION:
Students read about St. Damian and learned about missionaries as well as the leprosy disease as well as Ebola.
HOMEWORK: none

10.7.14 - Day THIRTY-SIX

Greetings from indoor recess/ resource day, Friends!  I hope you're well and wonderful on this not so beautiful Tuesday.  Hey, tomorrow is supposed to be AMAZING, though, so this week is looking up weather wise!
