9.4.14 - Day FIFTEEN

This week?  He GONE!

Hellllllo, my friends and families!  It's Thuuuuursdaaaay!  Yay!  This week has absolutely FLOWN by!

We started a new classroom/ talking management system called "Classroom Nation".  I picked 5 team captains and then they selected their table mates.  These tables are working to earn points and can earn them by quick, smooth transitions to and from classes, not talking during class time, being prepared with materials, helping friends, etc. (and can lose them for the same reasons).  After 2 weeks, the table with the most points accrued wins a lunch with me in the classroom, a homework pass, and becomes the new captains.  The process then begins again and starts over anew.  So far, it is working SWIMMINGLY and without being too presumptuous, it seems to be getting a HUGE grasp on our talking issues.  We have a long way to go, but we're on the up and up which is awesome!

MASS:
Father Chandler discussed everyone contributing to the greater good and pulling their weight by contributing individual talents and strengths towards working together in unison, never in cliques. We all have something to contribute and when we are together, we are complete.

READING:
Today was our first meeting for LITERATURE CIRCLES!!!  To be honest, I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by how incredible the students did!  It was extraordinary hearing the students talking about reading and talking about books.  They did great jobs in their roles and I think these are going to be so wonderful for them!  New roles and reading have been assigned and are due next Thursday when Circles meet again.  See our pictures below...
HOMEWORK: none

MATH:
Learning Target: I can compare and order whole numbers and decimals.

We reviewed the concept of comparing and ordering decimals.  I demonstrated my tricks of adding zeros to the end of a decimal (which does not change the value of the decimal ever) to make the comparing numbers have the same amount of digits and then lining up the numbers to be compared on top of each other for easy analysis down the digits of place-value.
HOMEWORK: complete workbook page 5.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Students worked on projects for their group that will pertaining to Native Americans.
HOMEWORK: none tonight, but Study Guides are due by Mon. 9/8 and the TEST is MOVED to Thurs. 9/11.

RELIGION:
Students created a display in their notebooks about the New Testament.
HOMEWORK: none

SCIENCE:
Students learned about their BUG projects which will be due in over a month once the project officially begins.
HOMEWORK: none

LANGUAGE ARTS:
Since we are learning about nonfiction text and will be creating an informational text piece of our own, students examined newspapers for varying parts and looked at how articles are written and set up (through the 5Ws/ H).  Here is the organizer they completed on their scavenger hunt of sorts...

HOMEWORK: visit Printing Press and decide upon layout of newspaper; research possible points to add to piece about topic from book.

Don't forget to visit 32 degrees Yogurt Bar in the Paddock tonight from 3-7PM to benefit SMA!!! What a terrific reason to get a delicious treat!

Also, NEXT Thursday (9.11.14) is GRANDPARENTS' DAY here at SMA!!!  We hope to see as many grandparents here as possible for Mass and for hanging out with grandkids in our classrooms thereafter!

9.3.14 - Day FOURTEEN

Happy Hump Day Gents and Judies!  Quite a bit of info (and homework tonight) so stick with me through this entire post!  To access Ian's blog post today, click HERE.

Can you BELIEVE this AMAZING poster that our sweet Abby Newton made?!?  We were in need of a birthday poster and she volunteered to make one.  Let's just say that I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY.  I mean, WOWZA...this thing is awesome and she is so wonderfully creative!  Way to go, Miss "Abby-Lou"- we are so, so proud of and thankful for Y-O-U!

READING:
Learning Target: I can create an informational text chart to demonstrate prior knowledge.
We began a focus upon informational text and how we can utilize them to enhance our understanding of content and concepts at hand.  We discussed genre and how informational text (nonfiction) is a genre of reading.  We then created an organizer, to discuss how informational text can be useful to us. See images below:

Next, students selected an informational (nonfiction) text and completed the organizer as seen below. This is tying into Language Arts for the next week because we will be compiling information from our books into a differing form of informational text such as a newspaper, brochure, poster, or magazine article.  I allowed students to preview the online printing press tool we'll be using to create these informational displays based on our books.

HOMEWORK: none (however, if a student wishes to research a few topics of interest to add to his/ her newspaper, I won't be upset) :)

MATH:
Learning Target: I can compare and order whole numbers and decimals.
We focused upon comparing numbers with and without decimals and ordering them in various ways. We looked at decimals with various digits and compared which was 'greater than', 'less than', or 'equal to' other numbers.  Then, we played two different games of dice rolling to create decimals and then "Human decimals" to create numbers and compare and order them from greatest to least and then least to greatest.  It was interactive, informative, and fun!

HOMEWORK: none.  However, pleeeease peruse the Printing Press and mess around with making a newspaper.  If you have time, possibly research some insights to add about the topic of your book :)

Day 2 of Ian's blog! With meteorologist Henry!

Today's weather  0% chance of rain all day!!

MORNING:
Foggy with a temperature of 69 degrees.

REST OF THE DAY:
Partly cloudy with a high of 88 degrees.

TONIGHT:
Clear sky's with a 100% chance of STARS!!!! There will also be a temperature of 66 degrees but the stars will be better.

Now time for Ian's top 5 facts about myself!

1. I have had 7 surgeries all in one hospital visit last year with 17 stitches and a foot in a half scar.
2. I have a brand new energetic black Labor Doodle!
3. I have been wearing glasses for about 2 in a half weeks.
4.I have the most awesome friends and family!
5.My favorite book is Buddy.                 That was my top five!

                                                           This is kind of what my dog looks like he's so cute! :) My dogs name is Leo. Sorry its so big that's as small as I could get it.




Now you are probably wandering why would Ian need 7 surgeries!?!?

Well it all started at last years school Halloween party. I had strep throat. So my mom picked me up early and we went to the doctors office. They gave me a shot on my leg and I couldn't eve stand up for the rest of the day! But the next day I could walk.

About in a week or two I went  to get a cat scan I got but they said I had to stay at the hospital for a day, well by day they meant two weeks of horror. But I recovered and I feel great!

                                                    Grumpy Cat!

I absolutely love grumpy cat. I like him so much I can do his face. But I'm not the only one that likes Grumpy cat she's so famous that she is on world tour right now and people pay grumpy cats parents  to just see the cat she is also going to make a movie and a book!

9.2.14 - Day THIRTEEN

Happy September, everyone!  Yes, the blog got a fall-"ish" makeover.  I use the term "ish" because it's not quite fall juuuust yet :)
Can you believe we are in the NINTH month of 2014?  Ay carumba! Only 3 more months of this year?  STOP. IT.  It's almost fall y'all!  I don't know about you, but I just love fall.  Well, I love each season for different reasons, but there is something so new, so fresh, so promising about fall, ya know?  Maybe it's all that college football?!?  Happily, BOTH UofL and UK made awesome showings this weekend so congrats all around to the fandoms of each university.

As for Today...

Today was RESOURCE DAY!!!

We have a new blogger this week: IAN!!!  He is just the bomb dot com!  Check out his post by clicking HERE.

I got more than two meetings under my belt as well as lesson plans for next week, scheduling of activities, and resources for literature circles.  We are ready to ROCK and ROLL, people :)

 The kiddos got much-a resourcing done today and had a blast.  What a nice transition back to reality from a nice long weekend, huh?  I could get used to this type of schedule :)

8.29.14 - Day TWELVE

Hola mi amigos y estudiantes!  And Happy Friday to you!  It's the start of a long weekend and I most definitely feel that we are in need of a little rest and relaxation this weekend...plus, college football is starting!  Is anyone else pumped?!?  Gooooo CATS! (sorry Louisvillians)

READING:
We continued our practice of identifying the main idea from a passage and really utilized our strategy of questioning and coming up with the topic of the passage to get the main idea.  MAIN IDEA VIDEO #1 (Flocabulary); MAIN IDEA VIDEO #2.
HOMEWORK: none

MATH:
Decimals are all around us and unfortunately, many mistakes can be made and be quite costly (monetarily and health-wise).  Today, we looked at how misused and misplaced decimals can completely change the value of a number and therefore, cause a whole lot of unwanted issues!  We watched our DECIMAL VIDEO, reviewed homework, and then began group activity where students were put into partners and given ads to review.  Each of these Ads had a mistake in their decimals and students were to analyze them and identify the mistakes made and how they cost the business. They had a great time and it was so informative for them with great practice to boot!
