2.16.11

Hello allllll!!!  Sorry about not posting yesterday...it was a busy day...academic team after school, a doctor's appointment, AND my Daddy's birthday...sooo LOTS to do as you could probably imagine!

Today, we started with morning work of Daily Oral Language, Daily Math, and Daily Geography as usual.

Reading:
we got into our reading groups to practice our roles from reading chapter 2 last night.  Each person had a chance to present and interact with his/her group and get the feel of how a literature circle will run.  I am adament about training the students completely before setting them free to work in groups on their own.
HOMEWORK: Each group has been assigned several chapters to read of their books (depending on the group and the book...Ex: Crispin readers MUST read chapters 3-10; Holes readers MUST read chapters 3-6; Tuck Everlasting readers MUST read chapters 3-7, etc...) AND each person MUST complete his/her role sheet pertaining to the chapters read in order to adequately engage with his/her reading group. ALSO, play a spelling game or activity of your choice for your spelling words.  Remember, have fun!

MATH:
we took a timed quiz per usual and many students are moving up to different levels!!!  Most are at or are almost at Level 2, at least!!!  For the remainder of the class, we went over and completed an ORQ to hang in the hallway.
HOMEWORK: practice times tables - specifically, 6s, 7s, and 8s.

PM activities - SCIENCE
We are learning about FOSSILS!!!  Yesterday, we had a fun "Magic Bag" activity in which we felt, observed, and reviewed actual fossils and made inferences about what and where they came from.  Today, we viewed some powerpoints to learn about the types of fossils and what we can learn from them. Fossils are clues to the past. We also learned that someone who finds and studies fossils is a PALEONTOLOGIST.
Below is the fun fossil game we played.  It illustrates that fossils form when rocks and sediments are pushedc into layers on the earth.  The oldest fossils are the farthest down in layers.  Play the fun fossil game and read about about fossils at this wonderful site!:

HOMEWORK: Read passage about FOSSILS and use it to complete the crossword puzzle on the back.  Also, complete the 4-square fossil activity about the process of fossilization.  If you are able and have time, play the game above and view a few of the powerpoints linked on the site below!
Visit this site for powerpoints on fossils and other fossil games!

You are all amazing Scientists!
